Are Home Meal Delivery Kits Worth it?

The recipes are always simple to follow!

Home delivery kits have had their ups and downs over the years, but with the pandemic meal delivery kits became quite popular once again. All of the ingredients needed to make a well-rounded meal, delivered to your doorstep was just the right combination for many to give meal kits a try.

A few years ago, my family and I had given Blue Apron a try. Overall, the meals took a substantial amount of time and my family wasn’t crazy about the meals. In January of 2021, I decided it was time to try out another meal delivery service.

One of my biggest struggles as a parent has been cooking meals that everyone in our household enjoys. Sure we have our favorites, but those meals were on repeat way too often. A little variety was needed for our dinner dishes. I had seen several advertisements for Hello Fresh and was pleased with the meal options offered each week. It was time to give Hello Fresh a shot and see what it was all about.

The registration process was simple as well as receiving an introductory offer. I downloaded the app for make the ordering even more convenient and before you knew it, food was at our door and the cooking began.

So here we are mid-May and we are still consistently ordering from Hello Fresh. Take a look at some of the benefits I have found from ordering.

  • It has been super convenient to have the box of food delivered to our front door on a weekly basis.

  • All of the ingredients are included except for salt, pepper, olive oil and butter. When you select your meals, you can see which additional ingredients are required for the meal.

  • The meals are quick to make. I am thrilled that tonight’s meal takes 15 minutes to make.

  • I order 3 meals per week for 4 people. The portions are just right and stop us from over eating. Some meals, we will have leftovers and I’ll eat them for lunch the next day.

  • The weekly meal options have gotten us to try new recipes and my kids have branched out and have been exposed to more foods. (Lillian is still not a fan of tilapia, but that’s ok, I am happy she gave it a try.)

  • Some of the meals call for using the oven, we tend to opt for using the air fryer instead. This has been a great way for us to use the newer appliance more often.

  • Let’s be honest, it’s easy to meal plan and then throw your plan to the side when life gets busy. You’ve already purchased all of the food and before you know it, the food goes bad. Hello Fresh has encouraged us to make that food before it expires, which has decreased the amount of food that is tossed.

  • You can always add a favorite vegetable or side salad to any meal.

  • I have also picked up a few cooking skills that I have been able to use when cooking other meals. Who would have known how simple it was to make pickled onions or meatballs?!?

  • The recipes are easy to follow with the use of the Hello Fresh app or the printed paper recipe card that arrives with your food. I save the recipe cards so that we can recreate our favorite meals again.

I still go to the grocery store for other food on a weekly basis, but it has been a huge stress reliever to have previously selected 3 dinner meals for the week. Sometimes you just need to find a way to make things a little simpler and convenient. These meals give us variety, we are cooking and we are wasting less food. I would definitely say that Hello Fresh has been a win for us. Don’t get me wrong, there have been meals, my kids haven’t liked, but they give it a try. The more food exposures the better, and you never know, maybe one of these days, they will change their minds about fish.

Overall, a few dishes that have stood out are the Baja Fish Tacos, Pecan Crusted Trout and the Oven-Ready Dijon Onion Crunch Chicken. The burgers are pretty great, too. There are over 20 meals to select from each week. This includes meals that can be upgraded for an additional fee.
