Ride the Rim

Grand Canyon National Park

Fall is a great time of year to visit the Grand Canyon. You can count on cooler temperatures, stunning views and fewer visitors when compared to the peak summer season.

During pervious visits, I’ve explored the Grand Canyon by car. We’ve pulled over at various pullouts and have enjoyed the views. Well, this past weekend we experienced the park by bike and I must say this was the highlight of our getaway!

What to Know Before You Go

Grand Canyon Bike Ride

Mary and Lillian did a great job riding on the rim!

  • The Grand Canyon National Park has bike paths along the rim of the canyon. Paths can also be used for those walking.

  • There are three bike routes to take in the park, each varies in length. The paths are paved and are separate from regular roadways for vehicles.

    • Orange is the most family friendly bike path that is 5.8 miles roundtrip. Plan on 1-1.5 hours for the trip. This is also a great option if you don’t have a lot of time to spend in the park.

    • Red is 11 miles in distance. This is another great option for families that would like to have minimal vehicle traffic.

    • Yellow is a longer path that is 21 miles in total distance. This is a more strenuous ride.

  • You may take your own bike or rent a bicycle . Reservations can be made in advance and walk-ups are welcome. Note that if you do not make reservations, you run the risk of all bikes being used when you arrive. We were able to walk up and rent bikes without a reservation. Rentals include a helmet and bike for a minimum of 1 hour to a maximum of 24 hours. Rates begin at $11 + tax for an hour. Bikes are available for kids and adults. Trailers and Tagalongs are also available for kids that are not yet riding bikes on their own yet.

  • Determine how long you would like to spend on the bike and choose an appropriate route. Pack a lunch to take and enjoy a picnic on the way.

  • Check the weather before you begin your ride.

  • Take a backpack to carry snacks or your lunch.

  • Bring a camera to snap photos of the park.

The ride is quite peaceful. It’s such a great way to see the park and take in the scenic views. If you’re lucky, you can see wildlife during your bike adventure. We were able to see Big Horn Sheep! Enjoy planning a time to take a ride on the rim and you’ll be so happy you did!
