Summer Reads for Those Long Summer Days

The book stack on my nightstand is forever growing. I am not quite sure when I am going to get through all of the books, but boy do I get excited about reading a book! Reading is definitely one of my favorite things to do.

If you’re looking for a good read this summer, check out my list that include five of my all-time favorite books!

  • American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins - Jeanine Cummings wrote a page turner! American Dirt tells the story of a woman and her son that are running from the cartel and are doing whatever it takes to make it safety to America. This story is one for everyone to read. This book will have you staying up late to read and putting off housework so that you can find out what happens to the main characters. This 2020 release is a favorite of mine!

  • Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende - This book was the first I had read by Isabel Allende and I have been hooked ever since! The main character in the book was born in Chile and heads to America in the 1840s following her love. The book is set during California Gold Rush.

  • Educated by Tara Westover - This memoir explains the life of a woman who was raised with her survivalist family and did not attend school. Read how she was kept out of mainstream America and what she did with her life.

  • The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah - The novel takes place in rural Texas during the Dust Bowl. The author paints a clear picture of the trials and tribulations that those living during this era experienced. This is a must read for anyone interested in a glimpse back in history. Spoiler alert, this is one now one of my all-time favorite reads!

  • The Wild Girl by Jim Fergus - This truly has to be one of the best historical fiction books about during the 1930s in the west. A young journalist heads to Arizona in search of a boy kidnapped by the Apaches. Jim Fergus does a phenomenal job describing the time period and the wild girl.

Don’t forget you can always check out books from your local library. We visited the library over the weekend, and it really was a great way to spend an afternoon. The kids and I enjoyed finding books to read and I was so pleased with the program offerings. Don’t miss out on summer reading programs for adults and kids and many other great opportunities available at your local library.

In case you missed it, the book club pick for the month of June is Verity by Colleen Hoover. It’s a thriller about an author who gets her first big break and things don’t go as planned. Enjoy the read! Several people have mentioned how much they have liked the book.
