Exploring Del Mar, California: What to Know Before You Go

If you’re looking for the perfect Southern California beach getaway, Del Mar checks every box. With its walkable charm, stunning ocean views, and laid-back coastal vibe, it’s the kind of destination that makes you instantly slow down and soak it all in. Whether you’re planning a quick weekend trip or a longer stay, here’s everything you need to know before visiting Del Mar.

Where to Stay in Del Mar

One of the best ways to experience Del Mar is by staying right on the beach. The Del Mar Beach Hotel is a standout option thanks to its unbeatable oceanfront location. Waking up to the sound of waves and stepping directly onto the sand is hard to beat. The hotel has been around since 1968 and offers everything you need for a relaxing beach stay.

The Perfect Beach Stay

The Del Mar Hotel is a great spot that is located right on the beach!

Another major perk? The hotel is within walking distance of many restaurants and shops, making it incredibly convenient, especially if you want a relaxing, car-free getaway. It’s also very family-friendly, making it a great option whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or with kids.

One thing to keep in mind: parking is limited. If you’re driving, plan to arrive earlier in the day to increase your chances of getting a spot. If there isn’t a parking spot available, the hotel will reimburse you for metered parking.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Del Mar?

While summer is peak season in Del Mar, visiting during the off-season can make your trip even more enjoyable. Late fall and early spring offer a sweet spot with fewer crowds, more availability at hotels, and often more reasonable rates—especially for oceanfront stays.

You’ll still get beautiful coastal weather, plenty of sunshine, and all the charm Del Mar is known for, just without the peak-season hustle. Off-season travel also makes things like parking and dining reservations much easier, allowing for a more relaxed and spontaneous experience.

What to Pack (and What You Can Skip)

One of the best surprises about staying at the Del Mar Beach Hotel is that you don’t need to overpack for the beach. The hotel provides essentials like beach chairs, towels, and umbrellas, which makes traveling lighter and easier.

Instead of loading up your car with bulky gear, focus on the basics—swimsuits, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, and a light layer for cooler evenings.

Best Restaurants in Del Mar

Del Mar is packed with incredible dining options, many of which are just a short walk from the beach.

If you’re looking for a nostalgic, classic spot, Harry’s Coffee Shop is a must-visit. It’s a longtime La Jolla favorite and I was thrilled to see another location in Del Mar. (A fun memory, my dad would take us on our birthdays to Harry’s before school on our birthdays.) Harry’s is a great spot for breakfast or lunch. Dining is available indoors or on the patio.

For a more elevated dinner, head to Jake’s Del Mar. Known for its oceanfront views and fresh seafood, it’s the perfect place for a sunset meal. Not to worry, if you are not a seafood lover, they have a variety of great choices to choose from as well as a variety of creative and classic cocktails.

Craving Mexican food? Tamarindo Del Mar offers both indoor and outdoor dining and delivers on flavor and atmosphere.

For something more casual, Del Mar Pizza is ideal for lunch or after a day at the beach. You can grab a slice, enjoy a fresh salad, or share a whole pizza with friends or family.

And don’t forget dessert—Saffron & Rose is the perfect stop for ice cream or frozen yogurt to end your day on a sweet note.

Things to Do in Del Mar

Of course, the main attraction in Del Mar is the beach itself. Long walks along the shoreline, soaking up the sun, and enjoying the ocean breeze are all part of the experience. Lifeguard towers are stationed along the beach, adding an extra layer of safety and peace of mind.

If you’re planning a full beach day, consider packing a picnic so you can stay longer and truly enjoy the scenery.

If you’re visiting during the right time of year, don’t miss the Del Mar Racetrack, which is one of Southern California’s most iconic attractions. Known for its summer racing season. Whether you’re a longtime racing fan or just looking for something different to do, spending an afternoon or evening at the racetrack is a fun way to mix things up during your beach getaway. Be sure to check the race schedule ahead of time, as events are seasonal.

Explore Beyond Del Mar

While Del Mar has plenty to offer, its location also makes it a great home base for exploring nearby destinations.

Take a short drive to Carlsbad to visit the famous Flower Fields (seasonal but worth it). If shopping is on your list, head explore the shops at UTC .

For a classic Southern California experience, visit La Jolla to see the seals and enjoy beautiful coastal views. You can also stop by the Birch Aquarium at Scripps for an educational and fun outing.
